GLOSSARY / Core terminology

UXO — unexploded ordnance

Explosive ordnance that has been used or prepared for use but has not functioned as intended. In construction discussions, UXO commonly refers to potential buried ordnance from past bombing or military activity.

THE RRS GLOSSARY

Why it matters to a project

The term describes a potential hazard, not a risk rating. A project still needs evidence about the site and the proposed activity to understand whether an encounter is credible.

PROJECT EXAMPLE

A former developed site may need assessment before new foundations extend into different ground.

A useful distinction

UXO is not a synonym for every metal object or every geophysical anomaly.
